In the not-too-distant future, private investigator David Carmichael is hired by android production magnate Marlon Veidt to find his missing daughter, Melissa. She has gone into Zone 414, a tightly secured area granted to Veidt by the government, where the androids (or "synths") that his corporation produces can interact with humans. In short order, it has morphed from a research and development facility to being a playground for the super-rich. For an exorbitant fee, wealthy clients can have all of their pleasures satisfied. David is sent to meet Jane, a highly advanced A.I. who was Melissa's friend, to solve the disappearance. Veidt wants to keep everything about the investigation under cover because his clients need to be assured that Zone 414 is safe. Jane herself is being systematically stalked, too. David learns from Jane's supervisor, Royale, the address where Melissa was last seen. He takes Jane with him. When the person he meets wants to exchange answers for a couple of hours with Jane, she grabs a glass, breaks its rim into jagged points, and holds it to this throat. The man's assistant tells them, "Down by the boat docks."
